Which U S state was created as a result of the Civil War? Answer

The U.S. state that came into existence directly due to the Civil War is West Virginia. In 1861, as the nation fractured and Virginia seceded to join the Confederacy, the residents of the western counties of Virginia held distinctly Unionist views. These differing loyalties led the people in the west to organize conventions and ultimately vote to separate themselves from Virginia, aiming to remain within the United States.

Following their declaration of separation, the loyalist government of Virginia, known as the Restored Government of Virginia, provided its consent for the formation of a new state from its western territories. After fulfilling the necessary constitutional steps, including a vote by the inhabitants of the proposed state and the approval of the U.S. Congress, West Virginia officially joined the Union as the 35th state on June 20, 1863. It stands as the only state in American history formed through secession from a Confederate state during the Civil War.
