Lima beans are named for a city in which country?
Lima beans are named for Lima, the capital city of Peru. Although the bean itself is native to the Andes region and was cultivated in Peru for thousands of years before the arrival of Europeans, it was through the port of Callao, near Lima, that these beans were widely exported during the Spanish Viceroyalty.
As these beans were shipped to other parts of the Americas and Europe, they were often labeled with their point of origin, "Lima, Peru." This association with the capital city in international trade led to the adoption of "lima bean" as their common name in English and other languages, despite the fact that they were grown throughout various regions of Peru.
