American patriot Ethan Allen is a co-founder of what U.S. state?

American patriot Ethan Allen is considered a co-founder of the state of Vermont. During the lead-up to and the early years of the American Revolutionary War, Allen was a key figure in the Green Mountain Boys, a militia organization that protected the interests of the settlers in the New Hampshire Grants, the territory that would eventually become Vermont. These settlers were in dispute with the colony of New York, which also claimed the land.

Allen and the Green Mountain Boys played a crucial role in asserting the independence of the New Hampshire Grants. They famously captured Fort Ticonderoga early in the Revolutionary War, a strategic victory that provided the Continental Army with much-needed cannons and supplies. Following years of self-governance and resistance, Vermont declared its independence as the Vermont Republic in 1777, with Allen remaining a prominent leader. While not one of the original thirteen colonies, Vermont eventually joined the Union as the 14th state in 1791, largely due to the efforts of figures like Ethan Allen in establishing its distinct identity and independent spirit.
