Hotfoot Teddy, a young bear cub discovered scorched and perched atop a tree during a forest blaze in the Capitan Mountains of New Mexico in 1950, was affectionately named. Saved by firefighters, he was gifted to the National Zoo in Washington, D.C., where he assumed a crucial role. Hotfoot Teddy was appointed as the emblem and ambassador for the Department of Natural Resources Fire Prevention Program. Eventually, he was rechristened as Smokey Bear. Presently, Smokey Bear stands as a widely acknowledged figure for forest fire prevention, acknowledged for his role in significantly diminishing the annual incidence of forest fires.
